Dogs use their body language to communicate, so it’s important to pay attention to any changes in their habits.

 Some common signs of stress in dogs are:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Avoidance and apathy
  • Vomiting, or diarrhea 
  • Self-mutilation by excessive chewing or licking
  • Destructive behavior 
  • Crouched body posture with body lowered, tail tucked and ears back
  • Snapping or biting
  • Altered sleeping patterns
  • Increased vocalizations
  • A tense body, panting, trembling and tight muscles

Some causes of stress in dogs are changes in the environment, unfamiliar people, places, or animals; or, separation from familiar people. Other common stressors are from loud noises such as during thunderstorms or from fireworks. 

 Also, pain can show similar signs compare to stress. If you believe that your dog may be stressed he might actually be in pain. It is recommended that you should bring your dog to the veterinarian to get a thorough checkup. 

Dogs can also mirror the emotions of their owners. If you are stressed, your dog could be picking up on that emotion and is causing them to be stressed. If you noticed any changes in your dog behavior then it is worth assessing changes in your life.

  • Always reward positive behavior and ignore bad behavior. 
  • Providing them balanced food to promote their health.
